Meet Rishi Sunak the new Prime Minister of Britain
After Boris Johnson resigned in July and Liz Truss announced her resignation on Thursday, Sunak becomes the United Kingdom’s third prime minister this year.
On Monday, he was elected leader of the Conservative Party by his fellow MPs, and on Tuesday, he will officially assume his position following a meeting with King Charles III.

After the turmoil of the Truss administration, he has a lot on his plate, including dealing with the European energy crisis, a possible U.K. recession, and calls for a general election.
Originally from India, Rishi Sunak was born on May 12th, 1980 in Southampton. His mother, Usha Sunak, was born in British-controlled Tanzania, while his father, Usher Sanak, grew up in the British province of Kenya.

Sunak’s ancestors originated from the Punjab region of British India. The 1960s saw a mass influx of East African families to the UK.
