UDA MP Accuses Raila Of Being In Govt And Opposition At the Same Time
Embakasi North MP has accused former prime minister Raila Odinga of playing both government and opposition roles despite repeatedly telling Kenyans he is not part of Ruto’s government.
Speaking on Tuesday, 25th March 2025, to a local media house, the UDA MP explained how the ODM-UDA pact goes against parliamentary standing orders, insisting Raila’s ODM cannot claim to hold the minority side in the National Assembly while simultaneously benefiting from government appointments.
“There is no way you can have one leg inside and the other outside. You must be in one position at a time. Raila should just leave his position in the chamber of the minority because he is no longer in opposition—he is already in bed with the government,” Gakuya stated.
He further noted how Raila’s growing influence in government has seen him get several slots in the most recent appointments of Cabinet and Principal Secretaries, as well as committee leadership positions in Parliament.
“You can’t be the minority leader while holding government positions at the same time. The standing orders do not allow this—it is illegal,” the lawmaker remarked.
The MP is now urging Mr. Odinga to pick, saying he (Raila) can no longer claim opposition status given his close alignment with the current government.
