1982 coup plotters Sgt Pancras Oteyo and Pt Hezekiah Ochuka at their extradition hearing in Dar es salaam Tanzania.

The two airmen had fled to Tanzania in a Kenya Air Force buffalo plane flown by two pilots,Major Nick Leshan and Lt Marende.

The extradition was sought by Kenya’s Attorney general James Kamere who wanted them to face charges of kidnapping the two pilots.

During the hearing the two airmen told the Tanzanian magistrate that the escape flight was a trip of mutual consent and that the pilots were not forced into flying the plane.

To the outrage of the Kenyan press, Kamere’s extradition request was turned down by the magistrate and the two airmen sought political asylum in Tanzania .

Their refuge in Tanzania was, however, short lived after the country bowed to Kenya’s pressure and returned them to Kenya to stand trial for their role in masterminding the coup.
